Forensic Anthropology Case Studies: Applied Approaches to the Outdoor Crime Scene

Editat de Dennis C. Dirkmaat, Andrea M. Zurek-Ost
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 20 ian 2027
Forensic anthropology has long been viewed primarily as a laboratory discipline focused on the analysis and identification of human skeletal remains. This volume expands that perspective by demonstrating that forensic anthropological interpretations are strongest when laboratory analyses are integrated with insights gleaned from the outdoor forensic scene. Through the framework of Outdoor Crime Scene Reconstruction, this book presents forensic anthropology as an applied discipline dedicated to reconstructing past events of medicolegal significance.
Drawing on forensic cases and the experiences of forensic anthropology practitioners, the chapters in this edited volume illustrate how forensic osteology, forensic archaeology, and forensic taphonomy operate in tandem to assist with the recovery, documentation, and interpretation of evidence in a wide range of contexts, including surface scatters, clandestine burials, fatal fire scenes, mass fatality incidents, the medical examiner’s office, and investigations of skeletal trauma. Throughout this volume, the authors emphasize hypothesis testing, contextual interpretation, and continuity from field recovery through laboratory analysis. The case studies in this volume illustrate how integrated forensic anthropological approaches can contribute to the refinement of investigative hypotheses, reconstructing depositional histories, distinguishing human actions from natural processes, and generating scientifically grounded reconstructions of events surrounding death and deposition. Collectively, this volume demonstrates that contemporary forensic anthropology has evolved beyond the identification of human remains into a multidisciplinary, evidence-based applied practice that integrates field and laboratory approaches to reconstruct the circumstances surrounding death.
This book is intended for forensic anthropologists, medicolegal death investigators, law enforcement personnel, and students of forensic science. Combining theoretical discussion with practical case studies and lessons learned from them, this text serves as both a professional resource and a companion text for undergraduate and graduate courses in forensic anthropology, forensic archaeology, and forensic taphonomy.
