Set in 2008 during a blistering heatwave, Lynch perfectly captures the essence of East London in the build up to the 2012 Olympics. With Kelly Porter, Lynch has already created a compelling central character for her series. In this prequel, we meet a younger version of Kelly who adds a stunning layer to the Kelly readers already know and love. A complex, pacy, thoughtful and deeply moving novel - this is the prequel of all prequels! I loved this book. Is it too much to hope for more Kelly prequels to follow?
A fast-paced, ultra-creepy thriller with a great sense of place and relatable characters - a brilliant read whether you're already a Detective Kelly Porter fan or not. Loved it.
There’s a darkness at the heart of First Act that feeds into our deepest insecurities, turning our fear inwards. I absolutely tore through it. There’s a dark edge and an unsettling realism to this thrilling novel. Rachel Lynch weaves the different elements together so cleverly and I was completely wrong-footed at the end. Such clever writing, brilliantly researched and, like all good nightmares, terrifyingly familiar! Highly recommended.
It’s wonderful to read of the first case of Kelly Porter and be plunged into a fiendish, fast-paced story. I loved it.
