Dr Fouad Maalouf is an internationally reputed legume breeder working with ICARDA since 2007 and a professional career spanning over 24 years. He worked in different legumes crops including faba bean, chickpea and lentils and grasspea and he has coordinated durum wheat water use efficiency” at LARI and was teaching botany and Genetics at Saint Joseph (1997-2007) and Lebanese Universities (2003-2007). He has deep knowledge on faba bean genetic and breeding and genomics of faba bean. Currently his current research covered different legume crops including faba bean, chickpea, lentils and grasspea. He authored or co-authored more than 160 research publications, including 55 referenced journal articles. He contributed to the release of 16 faba bean varieties with NARS partners. He currently leading different project on legumes, including EBRD and H2020 funding.
Dr. Shiv Kumar, PhD, is a renowned plant breeder with expertise in resistance breeding, pre-breeding, and development of genetic and genomic resources of legume crops. His contribution in developing short-duration photoperiod insensitive biofortified varieties of legumes is well recognized. During 35 years of professional career, he in collaboration with national partners has contributed to the development of 51 lentil, 5 mung bean, 2 urdbean, 1 rice, and 3 grasspea varieties and published 310 research articles, 90 book chapters, 14 books, and 7 technical bulletins. He is a Fellow of Crop Science Society of America, International Legumes Society, Indian Society of Genetics and Plant Breeding, and ISPRD. He has received many academic distinctions, fellowships including Rockefeller, and awards from national and international organizations/societies. Presently, he is leading ICARDA’s South Asia and China Regional Program which aims to deliver climate smart germplasm of legumes and cereals for sustainable intensification of cereal based cropping systems.
Dr. Smita Kaul is currently working as a Associate Scientist at ICARDA. Before this, she worked as a plant breeder in the private seed industry, where she contributed to the development of over 30 commercial hybrids. Her research expertise includes gene pyramiding for resistance to the leaf curl virus in vegetable crops. She also served as a senior scientist on deputation to the Department of Science and Technology, playing a key role in the incubation and value addition of farmers' varieties. She holds a Ph.D. in vegetable breeding from the University of Horticulture & Forestry, Nauni, Solan, India, and a master's degree from Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University, Palampur, where she was awarded certificates of honor for her outstanding academic achievements in both programs.
Prof. Chittaranjan Kole is an internationally reputed scientist with an illustrious professional career of spanning over thirty-eight years and original contributions in the fields of plant genomics, biotechnology and molecular breeding leading to the publication of more than 160 quality research articles and reviews. He has edited over 170 books for the leading publishers of the world including Springer, Wiley-Blackwell and Taylor and Francis Group. His scientific contributions and editing acumen have been appreciated by seven Nobel Laureates including Profs. Norman Borlaug, Arthur Kornberg, Werner Arber, Phillip Sharp, Günter Blobel, Lee Hartwell and Roger Kornberg. He has been honored with a number of Fellowships, Honorary Fellowships, and national and international awards including the Outstanding Crop Scientist award conferred by the International Crop Science Society. He has served at all prestigious positions in academia including as Vice-Chancellor BC Agricultural university, Project Coordinator of Indo-Russian Center of Biotechnology in India, and Director of Research of Institute of Nutraceutical Research of Clemson University, in USA. He worked also in the Pennsylvania State University and Clemson University as Visiting Professor in USA. He was awarded with the Raja Ramanna Fellow by the Department of Energy, Government of India. He is also heading the International Climate-Resilient Crop Genomics Consortium and International consortium for Phytomedomics and Nutriomics as their founding Principal Coordinator and presently as President.
