Explorations in Forensic Psychotherapy: The Work of the Portman Clinic from 1933 to the Present
Editat de Stephen Blumenthal, Jessica Yakeleyen Limba Engleză Paperback – 31 mar 2027
In each chapter, past and present clinicians at the Clinic describe their thinking and clinical work in relation to specific patterns of behaviour and the contexts in which they can be understood. Addressing topics as varied as internet offending, shame and stalking, each author reflects on how their work continues the Clinic’s legacy of psychoanalytic and psychotherapeutic understanding. Theoretical perspectives on violence, sexual deviance, delinquency and criminality are interwoven with the practical and technical challenges of working with this demanding but rewarding patient group. The book also addresses questions of risk and ethics, and the institutional complexities that arise in the care and treatment of these individuals.
This book will be essential reading for psychologists, psychiatrists, psychotherapists and psychoanalysts working in forensic settings. It will also be of interest to other professionals who work with people with personality disorders, and to those working with patients in mental health services, the criminal justice system and private practice.

Recenzii
“Violence is a human communication; albeit one that can be incomprehensible in its cruelty and its destructiveness. It is the language of the disorganised mind and if we are going to take violence reduction seriously, we need to ensure that there is a supply of good therapists who are willing to sit down with those whose deeds can be unspeakable. The Portman clinic is a place where there are such therapists; and this rich and thought-provoking book describes the excellent work that can be done when therapists speak the language of hope and reflection.”
Dr. Gwen Adshead, Forensic Psychiatrist & Psychotherapist, Author of ‘The Devil You Know’ & ‘Unspeakable’, and 2024 Reith Lecturer
“For nearly a century the Portman Clinic has sailed between the rocks of Scylla and the whirlpool of Charybdis. With its port in psychoanalysis and its starboard in forensic reality, it continues to navigate a treacherous passage where few intrepid souls dare to go. This book is a testament to that journey, in which clinicians continue to discover the intellectual breadth and emotional depth possible when psychoanalysis is joined with the often gritty, and sometimes frightening, territory of forensic revelation.”
Dr. J. Reid Meloy, Forensic Psychologist and Research Psychoanalyst, Author of ‘The Psychopathic Mind’
“This important book reveals the complexity, efficacy and humanity of the work of the Portman Clinic, now at its centenary. The application of psychoanalytic theory to therapeutic work with the most troubled and complex members of society, those who pose risk to others, is illustrated throughout, with eloquence that engages and enlightens the reader. Each chapter is written by a current or former member of the Clinic, covering topics including sexual abuse, stalking and serious violence, and clearly demonstrates the power of forensic psychotherapy in modifying dangerousness, risk and deviance.”
Dr. Anna Motz, Consultant Forensic and Clinical Psychologist, Author of ‘A Love that Kills: Stories of Forensic Psychology and Female Violence’
“The Portman Clinic has been assessing and treating people of all ages suffering from problems of delinquency, violence and perversions for almost 100 years. This volume is anchored in that extraordinary century of experience with contemporary explorations of this as well as addressing stalking, trauma and other destructive behaviours. The Portman’s way of working psychoanalytically with people who resort to disturbed and disturbing actions remains apparent throughout the book – never losing sight of the traumatised person behind the problems. This remarkable book is a must read for all those involved in working with people whose suffering can otherwise provoke particularly punitive societal responses.”
