Jess was born at the edge of the caves, raised to fight the creatures blamed for humanity's collapse. For generations, her people have guarded the entrance and paid for the world's survival in blood.
Then grief breaks the life she was built to endure.
Jess walks away.
Branded an outcast and condemned as a traitor, she crosses the desert in search of the mother she barely remembers and a life that belongs to her. Beyond the caves, however, she discovers a society that despises the warriors who protect it. Propaganda has turned sacrifice into shame, and the scars that once marked Jess as a defender now make her a target.
In the quiet town of Havensfield, Jess begins to build something she never expected to have: work, friendship, love, and the possibility of a future.
Then she discovers a monster far from the caves.
The creatures have found another way through the mountains, and the truth behind their survival may be more dangerous than Jess ever imagined. To protect the life she has found, she must decide whether being an outcast means abandoning her old duty-or choosing for herself what is still worth fighting for.
