Elder Mediation: Navigating Ageing with Dignity and Respect
Autor Elizabeth Chan, Winnie Chanen Limba Engleză Paperback – mar 2027
The book explores ageing and ageism; changing family relationships and intergenerational responsibility; dementia, capacity and supported participation; elder abuse and safeguarding; caregiving, residential care and ageing in place; and end-of-life care, dying in place and farewell. It also examines the legal and financial architecture surrounding later-life planning in Hong Kong, including enduring powers of attorney, advance care planning, advance medical directives, wills, probate, guardianship and financial arrangements. Through practical frameworks, illustrative scenarios, reflection questions and chapter takeaways, readers will learn how elder mediation can help make hidden assumptions visible, clarify responsibilities, support the older person’s participation, identify risk, reduce conflict and turn vague intentions into practical, reviewable plans. Just as importantly, the book explains when elder mediation should be adapted, paused or stopped, and when other professional or protective intervention is required.
Accessible to older people and their families as well as mediators, lawyers, doctors and other healthcare professionals, social workers, psychologists, care and hospice professionals, bankers and financial advisers, this is both a practical introduction to an emerging field and an invitation to approach ageing differently: to talk earlier, listen better and plan more honestly, while keeping dignity, safety and the older person’s voice at the centre.

Recenzii
“I congratulate Winnie Chan and Elizabeth Chan for producing this comprehensive and authoritative guide to mediation for later life issues. As co-directors of Elder Mediation Development at the Hong Kong Mediation Society, they are pioneers in raising understanding and awareness of this increasingly necessary specialist process for helping address problems that older people face in our ageing societies. The book takes a practical approach and explores the importance of process design that accommodates the needs of older people and how to address urgent issues such as safeguarding, ageism and elder abuse.
More than that, it changes the narrative from one that describes ageing as ‘burden’ and ‘decline’ to one that encourages flourishing and supports older people to participate in decisions that concern their lives, in the way they want to, and ensures their voice is heard by the family members, friends, and professionals around them.”
Margaret Doyle, Independent Mediator, Cert. EM
“As elderly care providers, we see the immense emotional and practical strain families face during later-life transitions for their loved ones. This groundbreaking book is an indispensable roadmap for our sector. Moving into residential care should not be seen as a failure, but as a collaborative partnership within a broader care continuum. The authors destigmatise care transitions. The proactive elder mediation frameworks introduced here are vital tools that empower care homes, healthcare professionals, and families to dismantle moral blame, protect the older person’s autonomy, and replace crisis-driven chaos with structured, dignified, and sustainable care plans. A must-read for modern eldercare leadership.”
Sandy Macalister, CEO, Helping Hand Hong Kong
“This book delivers an accessible guide to elder mediation, ideally suited for readers without formal legal training. Grounded in rich, real-world case examples, it unpacks intricate family dynamics, sociocultural contexts, and practical realities. The work arrives at a timely juncture, responding to growing societal recognition of older adults’ rights to autonomy and dignified care. It masterfully distils overwhelming, multifaceted concepts into structured, actionable pathways forward. An essential, highly recommended resource for all professionals, family members, and practitioners navigating resolution to later-life matters.”
