In placing before the public this collection of Edgar Poe's poetical works, it is requisite to point out in what respects it differs from, and is superior to, the numerous collections which have preceded it. Until recently, all editions, whether American or English, of Poe's poems have been verbatim reprints of the first posthumous collection, published at New York in 1850. In 1874 I began drawing attention to the fact that unknown and unreprinted poetry by Edgar Poe was in existence. Most, if not all, of the specimens issued in my articles have since been reprinted by different editors and publishers, but the present is the first occasion on which all the pieces referred to have been garnered into one sheaf. Besides the poems thus alluded to, this volume will be found to contain many additional pieces and extra stanzas, nowhere else published or included in Poe's works. Such verses have been gathered from printed or manuscript sources during a research extending over many years. In addition to the new poetical matter included in this volume, attention should, also, be solicited on behalf of the notes, which will be found to contain much matter, interesting both from biographical and bibliographical points of view.

Edgar Allan Poe’s stories and poems are among the most haunting and indelible in American literature, but critics for decades persisted in seeing Poe as an anomaly, or even an anachronism. His works, with their bizarrely motivated characters and mysterious settings, did not seem to be a part of the literature of early nineteenth-century America. Critics realize now, though, that Poe was even more a part of the contemporary American literary scene than many of his more “nationalistic” peers, and that in much of his work Poe was making commentaries on slavery and Southern social attitudes, technology, the urban landscape, political economy, and other subjects.
This Broadview Edition includes a selection of Poe’s poems, tales, and sketches in such diverse modes of writing as tales of the supernatural and psychic conflict, satires and hoaxes, science fiction and detective fiction, and nonfiction essays on literary and social topics. Notă biografică

Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was one of the great American Romantic writers and a pioneer of the short story genre. Poe is best known for his poetry and short stories, particularly his tales of mystery and the macabre, and is considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre and one of the main contributors to the emerging genre of science fiction.
Harry Clarke (1889-1931) was an Irish book illustrator and leading figure in the Arts and Crafts Movement, influenced by both Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles. His illustration work can be found in great literary classics, such as Goethe's Faust and Charles Perrault's Fairy Tales. Dr Brook Haley holds degrees in English and French literature from the Louisiana State University and received a PhD in comparative literature from the University of California, Irvine. His interest in Poe's life and works began with a childhood visit to the Poe Museum in Richmond, Virginia and focuses on Poe's afterlife in French Symbolism. He is currently a lecturer in the School of Humanities at UC Irvine.
