Recenzii
“If schools want to successfully address behavior, everyone must first understand it. Dysregulated provides an easy-to-read blueprint for teaching staff AND school leaders to make sense of what a child needs in a moment of dysregulation, as well as build a climate where regulation can thrive through thoughtful planning and proactive strategies. This book should be on the shelf of every educator.”
Leah Kuypers, MA Ed., OTR/L, Founder and CEO of The Zones of Regulation, Inc.
“Every so often, I read a book about behaviour that makes me stop, underline something and think, ‘Yes, this is what schools need to be talking about.’ Dysregulated is one of those books. Most importantly, Simon and Emma don't leave us with the theory, they give teachers and leaders practical frameworks and strategies that can be taken straight back into classrooms and used with real children, on real Monday mornings, when things aren’t going according to plan. A timely, practical and important book that deserves to be read, discussed and most importantly, put into practice.”
Nicola S. Morgan, Multi-Award-Winning Keynote and TEDx Speaker, International Education Consultant, Author and Teacher
“For neurodivergent pupils, symptomatic hypermobility and its co-occurring health conditions shape how a whole school day feels. Few behaviour books written for schools acknowledge the impact of physical health in this way. That matters, because neurodivergence is broader and more interconnected than schools often recognise. Dysregulated is an important contribution to that conversation, inviting educators to see behaviour through a wider, more compassionate and more informed lens.”
Jane Green, MBE FCCT MA Ed, Founder and Chair, SEDSConnective (the hypermobility neurodivergence charity)
“At nurtureuk, we know that all behaviour is communication and supporting pupils to regulate their emotions is the foundation of both wellbeing and learning. Dysregulated captures this beautifully. It gives school leaders a practical, evidence-informed Regulation-First approach that never loses sight of high expectations and rightly champions tools like the Boxall Profile® to understand what pupils truly need. This is an invaluable guide for any school committed to helping every child flourish.”
Arti Sharma, CEO of nurtureuk, developers of the Boxall Profile®
“This is a fantastic book for understanding and supporting pupils who become dysregulated. In addition to explaining the science behind stress and behaviour in an accessible way, it provides a wealth of useful strategies for classroom and whole-school practice. I particularly like its message that putting regulation first is not about lowering expectations, but about helping pupils reach them. Grounded in real school experience, it’s an essential read for helping all staff create calmer, safer and more inclusive learning environments.”
Natalie Packer, SEND Consultant and Author
“Dysregulated is an important book for anyone working with children whose behaviour can be difficult to understand or manage. Simon and Emma help us look beyond the behaviour we see and understand the stress and dysregulation that may be driving it—and, crucially, what we can actually do to help. It combines a thorough and compassionate understanding of behaviour with practical strategies that teachers and school leaders can put into practice straight away. Clear, thoughtful and immensely useful, this is a book I’ll be recommending to schools and teachers everywhere.”
Rob Plevin, Teacher, Psychotherapist and Author of Take Control of the Noisy Class
“When we understand what is underneath a student’s behaviour, we can respond in ways that make a real difference. Dysregulated draws on a wealth of insight, experience and real-world understanding of the challenges schools face, bringing together the science of regulation with a practical Regulation-First approach that schools can genuinely put into practice. It helps adults see behaviour differently while maintaining high expectations, offering an essential guide for schools committed to understanding children and helping them thrive.”
Clare Williams, Co-founder and Author of Hamish & Milo, SEMH Consultant and Educational Psychotherapist
“What a refreshing and reassuring book. As I read it, I kept thinking, ‘I know these children. I’ve taught them.’ It validates so much of what I’ve learned throughout my career, while offering fresh insight into how we can understand and support children more deeply. The journey from firefighting to forward planning gives the book real cohesion, and I love the practical action steps at the end of each chapter. A breath of fresh air for schools, putting regulation first and helping us see beyond behaviour to what children really need. A brilliant book.”
Ginny Bootman, Relational SEND and Inclusion Specialist and Qualified Life Coach
“I've been waiting for Simon and Emma write their book! The topic of ‘Dysregulation’ is vital in today's world of education and young people. This book gives both clarity on its meaning in our contexts and, importantly, approaches and strategies on how to use that knowledge in practice. A clearly written resource that's grounded in practical everyday experience. Based on solid theory, it provides useful frameworks for practitioners to implement.”
Adele Bates, Behaviour and Education Specialist, Director of ABEducation
“This book is an essential read for anyone working in education. Whether you are an aspiring teacher, newly qualified practitioner, experienced leader, or member of support staff, it provides a thought-provoking and practical guide to understanding and responding to the increasing levels of dysregulation we see in our schools today. Whilst offering quick fixes, it also challenges us to reflect honestly on our own beliefs, responses, and professional practice, whilst equipping us with realistic strategies to support children more effectively. This is a timely call to arms for the sector… to work together to unpick the causes of dysregulation and build solutions that are compassionate, informed, and sustainable. With our children at the centre.”
Amy Baxter, Senior Education Adviser, SEND (Primary), Greenwood Academies Trust
“Emma and Simon’s understanding of SEMH and dysregulation has been shaped by years of listening, observing, reflecting and, most importantly, never losing sight of the child behind the behaviour. That experience shines through every page of this book. The observations, reflections, conversations and case studies are rooted in real children and real experiences in schools. This is not a book about labelling behaviour. It is about understanding what sits behind it, responding with curiosity and compassion, and giving adults the confidence to see the child rather than simply the behaviour. At a time when SEMH needs and dysregulation are growing across our schools, this is a book every teacher and school leader needs within reach. Practical, honest, deeply human – and quite simply, a book every teacher should have in their back pocket.”
