In a remote English village: a house. Inside the house: a child, a mother, a father, a cat, a mouse. Outside the house: a dog in the yard, a horse in the barn, a wolf in the forest.
This house is an island of respite for its inhabitants, who live a planned and structured life.
Among those looking for solace - or, perhaps, something else, something altogether different - in this place is Mark, a young American man who has escaped to this rural village for reasons he can't entirely pinpoint.
From these initial conditions, DOMINO spirals outward into directions even stranger and more startling than they first seem, as the force of what lies beneath this domesticity gradually surfaces. Unnerving and bone-chilling, the novel explores the phenomena of the role-playing that each of us, especially young men like Mark, do each day of our lives. As Mark is borne along by isolation, loneliness, and pride, the shadows of tragedy will follow him across many landscapes. Is there any such thing as a true self? Can we ever find new roles to live out, new ways to embrace ourselves?
DOMINO is an absolutely mind-altering work of fiction, taking us to new realms at once outlandish and eerily familiar, pulling us all the way outside the borders of our own identities and then circling deep into the core of our humanity: our yearning to find a way to be, amongst all the violence, grief, and pathos of the larger world and what our societies ask of us.
