Dissociation: A Contemporary Introduction: Routledge Introductions to Contemporary Psychoanalysis

Autor Clara Mucci
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 9 apr 2027
Dissociation: A Contemporary Introduction is a comprehensive and insightful exploration of the concept of dissociation in psychoanalytic theory and practice.
Clara Mucci offers a thorough historical overview, tracing the concept from its roots in the works of Freud, Janet and Ferenczi to contemporary neuroscientific understandings. Mucci's interdisciplinary approach, which integrates psychoanalysis, attachment theory, neuroscience and intergenerational studies, provides a unique and valuable perspective on this complex topic. By emphasising that only trauma of human origin leads to dissociative structures, Mucci challenges existing paradigms and offers a new framework for understanding severe psychopathology. The author's exploration of dissociation at both individual and collective levels, including its role in borderline disorders and the aftermath of genocide, offers fresh insights into this crucial area of study.
This book will be an invaluable resource for psychoanalysts in practice and in training looking to uncover new ways of working with clients experiencing trauma and dissociation, as well as students and scholars of psychology, psychoanalysis and behavioural sciences.

Recenzii

‘In this remarkable volume Clara Mucci, a world renowned psychoanalyst, neuroscience researcher, and gifted psychotherapist, offers a succinct yet comprehensive overview of her important contributions to the study of human trauma and dissociation. I highly recommend this volume, filled with evocative case histories, that is directly relevant to not only treatment but to how trauma indelibly impacts cultures.’
Allan Schore, author of The Right Brain and the Origin of Human Nature

‘In this book, Clara Mucci offers a fundamental contribution to our understanding of the characteristics and mechanisms underlying dissociation across conscious and unconscious, cognitive and affective, mental and bodily dimensions. Bringing Ferenczi and Janet into dialogue with attachment theory, contemporary neuroscience, and relational psychoanalysis, the author shows how dissociation can evolve from a protective response into a structure that fragments mind, body, and Self. Particularly valuable is the concept of “Embodied Witnessing,” a bottom-up interpersonal procedure through which therapeutic change emerges via affect regulation, bodily attunement, and the clinician’s capacity to bear witness to experiences that have not yet found an integrated representation. Methodologically rigorous and, at the same time, grounded in extensive clinical material, this book is essential reading for anyone working with dissociation and related disorders.’

Giuseppe Craparo, PhD, Psychoanalyst and Full Professor of Clinical Psychology, Kore University of Enna, Italy

‘Clara Mucci has written an indispensable book—not just about dissociation, as its title indicates, though it is that. It’s a detailed, comprehensive, persuasive integration of how specific early parental failure and mistreatment affect children’s mental and neurological functioning; how these changes damage children's neurological, mental, and interpersonal functioning; the specific forms of psychopathology that result; and what this means for treatment. Mucci integrates a contemporary psychoanalytic perspective with a comprehensive account of findings from attachment theory, regulation theory, and neurobiology—a broad range of science and scholarship with which she is thoroughly conversant. Her integration is elegant, and her writing is clear, compelling, and human. This book will deepen the understanding of dissociation and trauma, and their treatment, even for the most experienced, well-informed practitioners.’

Frankel,  Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor and Clinical Consultant in the New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis; Faculty at the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research, and at the Trauma Studies Program at the Manhattan Institute for Psychoanalysis, New York, USA
