This book sets itself three objectives. Firstly, it aims to provide a general and readable insight into the phenomenon of language in order to gain the reader's attention for this fascinating and uniquely human ability; secondly, it sees itself not only as an introduction to language but also as a fully-fledged introduction to linguistics which deals with all branches of the subject, and thirdly, the readers should be motivated and sensitised to continue their studies of language from a scientific standpoint on their own initiative.
