Designing Your Second Act: How to Create Meaning and Confidence Beyond Full-Time Work

Autor Tammy Martins
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 3 noi 2026
Designing Your Second Act is a practical, research-informed, and deeply accessible guide for mid-career professionals who feel the growing pull to rethink their relationship with work and intentionally shape their next steps. Drawing on design thinking, Lean management principles, continuous improvement, adult development theory, and real-life stories from individuals navigating major transitions, the book introduces a structured Life Design framework specifically designed for people aged 40– 60. Unlike traditional retirement planning books that focus almost exclusively on financial readiness, this book reframes the “second act” as a multidimensional life phase defined by purpose, well-being, creativity, contribution, identity, and freedom.
Through clear tools, reflective exercises, and real examples, readers learn how to imagine, prototype, and implement a second act that fits their values, personality, strengths, and aspirations. At its core, the book operationalizes life design using the same disciplined, iterative thinking that drives successful organizational transformation. Readers are guided through foundational clarity— identifying their purpose, values, and grounding beliefs, and readiness across health, wealth, and purpose—before moving into structured exploration.
The IDEA Cycle (a personal adaptation of the Lean Plan-Do-Study-Act cycle) serves as the engine of experimentation: readers generate hypotheses for possible next-chapter paths, design and run small prototypes, evaluate results, and refine their direction. Tools such as the Life Design Purpose Wheel, Life Design Playbook (a personal A3), Foundations Readiness Check, and a simplified fishbone diagram bring structure to questions that are often emotional, ambiguous, and overwhelming. These tools have already been piloted with coaching and workshops, demonstrating both usability and meaningful impact. The methodology is grounded in more than two decades of Lean practice, including the author’s experience as a Certified Lean Leader, Six Sigma Black Belt, and Kaizen Fellow.

Notă biografică

Tammy Martins is a senior executive, strategist, and writer with more than two decades of experience helping individuals and organizations navigate meaningful transition with clarity and purpose. Her career spans healthcare, financial services, and manufacturing, where she has led largescale transformation, strategy execution, and leadership initiatives focused on human-centered change.
Tammy is a Certified Lean Leader through John Black & Associates, a Six Sigma Black Belt through Maple Leaf Foods, and a Six Sigma Green Belt through General Electric. She was also one of Saskatchewan’s first Kaizen Fellows, completing a two-year, learn-by-doing program that shaped her experiment-driven, systems-oriented approach to change. Across her career, she has applied Lean thinking, design principles, and strategic planning to help organizations move from current state to future state with intention and discipline.
Her professional work designing resilient systems eventually prompted a deeper personal question: if these tools help organizations navigate complexity, why are they so rarely applied to major life transitions? That question became the foundation for Designing Your Second Act. Through years of research, interviews, reflection and storytelling, Tammy discovered that the same principles used to build resilient organizations can also be applied to build fulfilling lives beyond traditional definitions of success.
In addition to her executive leadership, Tammy is the founder of Next Chapter Life Design, a life design platform that supports mid-career and later-career professionals as they intentionally shape what comes next. Her work integrates structure with humanity, offering practical frameworks alongside encouragement and agency. This book serves as a cornerstone of that platform, reflecting her belief that meaningful transitions are not left to chance, but designed with care.
Tammy lives in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, where she continues to explore the practice of designing a life with intention, one conversation, one story, and one ripple at a time.
