Francine Battaglia is Professor and Chair of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at the University at Buffalo, and teaches courses on thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). She is the director of the Advanced Simulations for Computing ENergy Transport (ASCENT) Laboratory, which works on problems in the fluid-thermal sciences using CFD and developing computational models. Dr. Battaglia’s research includes single- and multi-phase turbulent reacting flows with applications in gasification processes, alternative energy production and building energy utilization. She was elected Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) (2009), Fellow of the American Society of Thermal and Fluids Engineers (2019) and Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (2025). Dr. Battaglia was the Editor-in-Chief for the ASME Journal of Fluids Engineering (2017-2025) and held the position of ASTFE President (2023-2025).
Ulrike Passe is a Professor of Architecture at Iowa State University in the USA, where she teaches climate-based design and environmental forces and systems. She is an internationally recognized scholar of sustainable architecture and natural ventilation. Her research into the relationship of spatial composition, the physics of moving air and energy use offers practical solutions to environmental challenges faced by people around the world and on multiple scales—from virus diffusion indoors to thermal conditions during heat waves. Her first book Designing Spaces for Natural Ventilation (2015), co-authored with Francine Battaglia is used across the world. Her research projects include the Interlock House built for the 2009 US DOE Solar Decathlon, the Iowa NSF EPSCoR building science plank 2011 to 2016, and the Sustainable Cities Research Group, founded 2015 at ISU to expand her research towards urban environmental modeling is currently funded by a $2.5 mio NSF INFEWS grant (2018-2025, with PI Jan Thompson) and a $1.2mio Smart and Connected Communities grant (2023-2026) to develop CommHeat, a localized heat health emergency alert system.
