Design Meditations: Architectural Praxis as an Exploration of Consciousness
Autor Newton D'souzaen Limba Engleză Hardback – 24 mar 2027
The discourse on design cognition has long sought to understand how designers analyze, create, and solve problems. Yet cognitive processes alone may not fully explain the awareness through which designers perceive and engage with the world. This limitation invites a complementary inquiry into the broader field of consciousness within which design thinking occurs. Drawing on consciousness studies, design cognition, architectural theory, and neuroscience, this book examines transcendental knowing as one dimension of this inquiry into consciousness. Within architecture, the work of Louis Kahn, Tadao Ando, Zaha Hadid, Laurie Baker, Glenn Murcutt, and Frank Lloyd Wright illustrate how loosening the dominance of form-making can open awareness toward the transcendental. Central to this inquiry are contemplative practices as a means of intentionally cultivating this awareness within architectural praxis. These practices are developed through guided meditative exercises that can be integrated into design practice, including site visualization, concept generation, and pre-construction visualization.
This book is a theoretical resource, practical guide, and studio companion for design educators, students and researchers in architecture and related design fields.

Recenzii
"D'souza asks a question architecture has too often neglected: Can deeper awareness make designers more empathic and more responsible? My own sense is that such awareness is cultivated first through the body, through the breathing, moving, resonant self that is always entwined with the places it inhabits. Read in that light, this book is a welcome companion, and its closing chapter may be its most useful gift. The guided contemplative exercises follow the real rhythm of practice, from first encounters with a site through concept, development, and the moment before construction. They don't ask designers to abandon their methods; they ask them to pause, attend, and bring more intuition and intention to work they already do. For students and practitioners alike, these are practices to try, test, and make one's own in the pursuit of creating and building with a greater sense of care."
— Sarah Robinson, author of Architecture is a Verb and The Architecture of Resonance: from Objects to Interactions
"At a time when design is increasingly informed by research in neuroscience and cognition, Design Meditations turns our attention to another avenue of inquiry: the consciousness from which designing itself arises. Extending established scholarship on design cognition, D’souza introduces a complementary perspective on the awareness through which designers perceive and engage with the world. Through the idea of transcendental knowing, he explores how contemplative practices might cultivate deeper modes of attention and bring them more intentionally into design praxis. By bringing consciousness into dialogue with design practice, Design Meditations invites deeper reflection on the inner dimensions of creative work."
