'... marvelous and formidable ... Defending the Revolution is, first and foremost, a political history of Scottish Presbyterianism from the waning days of the Restoration Killing Time through the aftermath of the Jacobite Rising of 1715.' Journal of British Studies
Descriere
The period between 1689 and 1716 witnessed a fundamental reordering of the political, religious and cultural map of the British Isles. Exploring the ecclesiastical settlement in Scotland, this book provides a thorough and thoughtful account of how Presbyterians seized the opportunities presented by the Glorious Revolution, and then the Act of Union, to establish the national Church in accordance with their ideals, at the expense of the Episcopalian model. It argues that this process was to have a deep and lasting effect on the development of both Scotland and an expansionist British state.
