Debating Planetary Politics: Transforming Environmental Politics and Policy

Editat de Daniel Deudney, Stefan Pedersen, Christine Winter
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 15 ian 2027
Debating Planetary Politics offers a range of perspectives that together provide a comprehensive overview of the issues and ideas central to the emerging field of planetary politics, giving due attention to its history, while primarily and uniquely advancing the contemporary state of the debate.
An eco-centric planetary politics first became a prospective new turn for the world politics of humanity when scientists around 1970 discovered that the Earth system, including its biospheric ecology, exists in a biogeochemical composition which enables and furthers the conditions for life on this planet, and that our species is causing an Earth system crisis that is jeopardizing planetary habitability. This book examines how to best navigate through this Earth system crisis and expands on what planetary politics is about by including multispecies and critical perspectives that were not prominent before. It is argued that the current global governance architecture is inadequate for ending the crisis. We will need a new planetary politics. But what do we have in mind when we talk about planetary politics? This complex inter- and transdisciplinary debate does not only require a sound grasp of the relevant Earth system science, but also of the cultural, social, economic, and political worldviews and practices that have brought about the present malaise, and of how old and new alternatives might enable constructive steps forward. This book therefore has a diverse group of expert contributors. They offer a variety of complementary and competing theoretical perspectives from Political Science, Political Theory, Political Economy, International Relations, Philosophy, and Sociology, getting to the core of what thinking in terms of planetary politics signifies in different registers.
Establishing planetary politics as its own distinct field, Debating Planetary Politics is important reading for students and scholars from a range of disciplines, including Global Environmental Politics, Political Science, International Relations (IR), Political Theory/Philosophy, Development Studies, Political Economy, Earth System Science, Environmental Humanities, Global/Intellectual History, Political Geography, Political Sociology, and Science and Technology Studies (STS).

Recenzii

“Debating Planetary Politics brings together a stellar line-up of scholars to rethink our collective response to the global ecological crisis. The volume is brimming with critical reflections and inspiring ideas. Highly recommended!”
Professor Robert Falkner, London School of Economics and Political Science, and author of Green Political Economy (Polity, 2026).
"This timely collection convenes some of the most influential and creative voices in (and beyond) IR to deepen and nuance our understandings of the politics of ‘the planetary’. It offers a panoramic view of the rich and dynamic ‘second wave’ of planetary thinking that has emerged since the 2010s, incorporating critical perspectives that range from technics to pluriversality, multispecies politics to global governance. In so doing, it showcases – and significantly advances - these debates in a way that no other book in the field has done yet, helping to place questions of the planetary at the center of international thought."
Professor Audra Mitchell, Wilfrid Laurier University and author of Revenant Ecologies (University of Minnesota Press, 2023).
Debating Planetary Politics provides a timely and critical contribution to emerging debates about how notions of justice, relationalities and modes of organising institutions and economies need to undergo a profound transformation if life for all species is to be sustained on this planet. Initiating a shift from ‘global’ to ‘planetary’ politics grounded in a more pluriversal, relational and multispecies perspective by pulling together leading authors to think politics anew with Earth foremost in mind, this is a critically important book which I thoroughly recommend.
Professor Peter Newell, University of Sussex, author of Global Green Politics (Cambridge University Press, 2019).

Debating Planetary Politics's title is apt: it gathers a genuinely wide range of voices — realist, Indigenous, ecocentric, decolonial, radical, skeptical — into an important, if unresolved, debate about whether political theory should, and can, move past nation-state and extant international political systems toward holistic, relational, life-affirming, planetary-scale governance. If there is a unifying thread, it is that extant global politics has not and cannot effectively address the accelerating crisis in Earth's socioecological systems, and that a planetary approach to human identity and governance is warranted.
Bron Taylor, Professor of Religion & Nature, University of Florida, and author of Dark Green Religion: Nature Spirituality and the Planetary Future (University of California Press, 2010).

"Debating Planetary Politics puts reformists and revolutionaries in the same book and lets the disagreement stand. Rather than closing ranks around a unifying school or a single model promising final answers, it keeps the field's real fault lines in view and stays with the trouble. That refusal of closure is the volume's achievement, and it yields the clearest picture we have of where planetary politics now stands."
Frederic Hanusch, Professor of Planetary Change and Politics, Justus Liebig University Giessen, and co-author of Our Planetary Condition: Foundations for a Politics with the Earth (MIT Press, 2026)
"Many of these chapters could expand into books. A collection of fertile, sometimes feverish perspectives that site crucial referents in technology, governance, and history, while making planetary politics differentiated, voluminous, pluralistic, and convention shaking. The ensemble opens up flows from older and newer cultures on the margins of the Great Reduction that is spiraling out the Earth's biophysical systems in a dangerous direction. Exciting."
Jeremy Bendik-Keymer, Professor of Philosophy, Case Western Reserve University, and Editorial Team member of Environmental Philosophy
