Daisy Miller

Autor Henry James
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 12 aug 2007
Daisy Miller (1878) by Henry James is the story of the exuberant and naïve Daisy Miller, a young American girl who flirts and partakes of young life to its fullest while visiting Europe. Daisy meets the more subtle and self-aware Winterbourne and their romance ends in misfortune.
The portrait of Daisy is a quintessential exploration of the social mores of her era. And her flirtatious disregard of them is simultaneously a breath of fresh air and the heart of tragedy.

Notă biografică

Henry James (1843 - 1916) was an American-born British writer. He is regarded as one of the key figures of 19th-century literary realism. He was the son of Henry James, Sr. and the brother of philosopher and psychologist William James and diarist Alice James. He is best known for a number of novels showing Americans encountering Europe and Europeans. His method of writing from a character's point of view allowed him to explore issues related to consciousness and perception and his style in later works has been compared to impressionist painting. His imaginative use of point of view, interior monologue and unreliable narrators brought a new depth to narrative fiction.

Descriere

Descriere de la o altă ediție sau format:
When the young American Frederick Winterbourne meets his compatriot Daisy Miller in the garden of a grand hotel in Switzerland, he is struck by her beauty, but slightly unsettled by her open ways and her flirtatiousness. Undeterred by this and by his aunt's disapproval, he invites her to join him in a jaunt to a nearby castle, little suspecting that this will set in train a sequence of events that promises to be a source of heartache and disappointment for him, and threatens to compromise his own social acceptability.

One of Henry James's most enduringly popular works, Daisy Miller, here published in its 1909 version, incorporating the author's final revisions, is a masterly, psychologically nuanced dissection of social mores and a merciless critique of convention and staid respectability.

Textul de pe ultima copertă

Henry James's Daisy Miller was an immediate sensation when it was first published in 1878 and has remained popular ever since. In this novella, the charming but inscrutable young American of the title shocks European society with her casual indifference to its social mores. The novella was popular in part because of the debates it sparked about foreign travel, the behaviour of women, and cultural clashes between people of different nationalities and social classes.

This Broadview edition presents an early version of James's best-known novella within the cultural contexts of its day. In addition to primary materials about nineteenth-century womanhood, foreign travel, medicine, philosophy, theatre, and art--some of the topics that interested James as he was writing the story--this volume includes James's ruminations on fiction, theatre, and writing, and presents excerpts of Daisy Miller as he rewrote it for the theatre and for a much later and heavily revised edition.
