The book explores social and structural inequalities that hinder participation of migrant, minoritised and racialised groups in the creative sector.
Calls to create more just, equitable and inclusive cultural spaces have become prescient in the public agenda following inequalities highlighted by multiple emerging crises. Despite this, there remains a lack of representation and participation of migrant, racialised and minoritised groups in the creative sector, and particularly so in publicly funded galleries. The proposed book considers the following key question: What does an equitable, community-led gallery look like? Its originality lies in foregrounding community-led perspectives and place-based approaches to addressing equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in publicly funded galleries. Current approaches to EDI in public galleries and museums tend to overlook the role and function of these institutions in relation to the diverse communities in which they are often embedded. The book puts forward a radical vision of EDI for public funded galleries and museums which brings communities into the heart of these organisations and argues that these institutions can serve as civic spaces, asking what publicly funded galleries would look like when they are an active partner in neighbourhood change.
