Character Education: Transforming Values into Virtue

Autor Holly Shepard Salls
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 9 noi 2006
Character Education juxtaposes John Dewey's philosophy of the person and values education with Alasdair MacIntyre's treatment of Aristotle's virtue theory in order to highlight the importance of virtue in developing good character. The initial overview of character education from colonial times to the present provides a context for understanding character formation and education taking place now. Salls' own contributions to the topic temper the text with her practical suggestions about character education for educators and administrators. The years she has spent as a teacher of character lend Character Education the wisdom and experience of a seasoned educational practitioner.

Recenzii

Shepard Salls is a scholar-teacher with 25 years of classroom experience. This fine and highly readable book provides the reader with a grounded understanding of character education... the author sure handedly deals with many of the practical issues and problems of implementation. Summing Up: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Lower-division undergraduates through practitioners.
This book makes a much needed contribution to the field of character education by providing it with a philosophic foundation...this is more than just a philosophic book; it is a practical book with a strong philosophic basis. Holly has personal experience both as a classroom teacher and as a school administrator and she fills the last part of her book with many practical ideas on creating a character education program for a school, integrating it across the curriculum, including mentoring, service learning, and parent education. I plan to use this book for my graduate class in character education and I encourage all teachers, parents, and educators who want to educate for character to read it...
