Canada–Cuba Ties: The Pursuit of Normal Diplomacy: Bloomsbury Studies on Cuba

Autor Dr. or Prof. John M. Kirk
en Limba Engleză Hardback – oct 2026
Through interviews conducted with diplomats of both Canada and Cuba, this book analyzes the evolution of bilateral relations between the countries with a focus on the last thirty years.

The relationship that Canada has with Cuba is unique. Despite historically close ties with the United States, which still maintains the "Trading with the Enemy Act" towards Cuba, Canada has consistently maintained solid diplomatic relations with the revolutionary government. Canadians make up the single largest group of tourists to the island (about 40% of those traveling there), Cuba is the largest trading partner in the region for Canada, and Canadian company Sherritt International is the second largest in the country. John M. Kirk discusses how these countries maintain a normal relationship, despite fundamental disagreements on an ideological level. This book offers a discussion on the developments during key government administrations including the governments led by Jean Chrétien, Stephen Harper, and Justin Trudeau.

Recenzii

"Dr. Kirk is the per-eminent scholar of Canadian-Cuban relations and he has produced a study that will likely be the standard reference work on the subject. Canada-Cuba Ties provides a rich overview of relations between the countries from 1960 to 2025 and detailed examinations of three key Canadian administrations since 1993. It well demonstrates that there has been a remarkable normalcy in the relationship, which has enabled both countries to accommodate differences and resolve disputes peacefully. Kirk's keen analyses offer important lessons for a constructive approach to engaging with Cuba - based on empathy and mutual respect - that US policymakers would be wise to adopt."
"This book could not be any more relevant, at a crucial moment for the two countries targeted in different ways by Donald Trump's USA. Kirk's fine study is an admirably detailed, but always analytical, account of the relationship over many decades, regardless of leaders and stances. His eye is always sharp, with a deep and perceptive understanding of the relationship's complexities, but it does us another service: namely to highlight US attitudes to its neighbours and the rest of the world."
"Utilizing his vast experience, contacts and access to foreign ministry documents in both Cuba and Canada, John Kirk provides a skillfully researched and written insight into Cuba-Canada relations over the last 30 years. Kirk provides analysis and nuance of how two countries with profound differences can develop and maintain a cordial and respectful bilateral relationship. As Kirk highlights, other countries have much to learn from Cuba-Canada relations."
"No one has followed Canada's relations with Cuba more closely over the years or with greater analytic insight than John Kirk. As a scholar and, at times, a participant in this history, he is uniquely positioned to take the reader through the highs and lows of this relationship, as seen from both Ottawa and Havana."
