Twelve years ago, Jade Bowyer, a tough young firefighter, watched a man die in a terrible blaze. Curtis Hoole was a criminal, an arsonist and a murderer. Jade didn't kill him, but she could have saved him.
Now, Jade has a new life as wildfire lookout in British Colombia, thousands of miles from her past. Haunted as she's been by Hoole's death, at four months pregnant she finally feels hope for the future.

Until a small, six-seater plane goes down in the forest and she urgently needs to attend the crash. When Jade arrives, the site is lit only by the flames of the plane's burning fuel. Wary of the fire, a pack of bears circle hungrily. There is only one survivor and he's barely breathing. Jade lifts his head to check his pupils.
It's Curtis Hoole, the man she killed twelve years ago.

Jude has her instructions: guard the scene and protect the bodies. Until she can be sure of this man's identity, she must keep him alive, because she can't kill the same person twice. No matter what he knows about her past . . .
