This is the gripping true story of one special forces patrol and how their heroic missions changes the course of WWII. The action is relentless, ranging from the sub-blasted wastes of the 1940s Sahara to the wild and rain-lashed killing fields of the then Yugoslavia in 1945. Serving with the Long Range Desert Group, the SAS and the SOE - Churchill's Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare - these men take the fight to the enemy by jeep, boat and warplane in the most daring of ways.
At one point their commander, Lewis 'Archie' Gibson, saves the life of SAS founder David Stirling when riding in a battle wagon named 'Wha Daur', a phrase culled from the Scottish ballad 'Wha Daur Meddle With Me?'
Based upon the unpublished manuscripts written by Gibson, this book reveals incredible wartime exploits, which were only ever intended for his family. When Gibson's son reached out to the author, Damien Lewis recognised a unique and powerful piece of untold WWII history. Behind Enemy Lines is the result - a fabulous tale of true grit, duty and undying brotherhood, laced with humility and humour, told by one of the bestselling military historians of our time.
