As for the English adaptations of Asterix, they represent a real triumph of the translator's art. Anthea Bell and Derek Hockridge have finessed every allusion and tweaked every joke, so that their cascading English verbal wit seems to come straight from the heart of the original books
A cartoon drawn with such supreme artistry, and a text layered with such glorious wordplay, satire and historical and political allusion that no reader should ever feel like they've outgrown it...It is absurd that these wonderful books were ever out of print, and it's great to have them back
If you're new to the indomitable Gauls, our favourite is Asterix in Britain, for its wry wit lampooning the Brits
There are plenty of Latin quips and snippets of Roman history, but enough low puns to make the stories as enjoyable as ever

Rene Goscinny was born in Paris in 1926. After growing up in Argentina, he came to America where he shared a studio with future MAD magazine co-founder Harvey Kurtzman and collaborators Will Elder and Jack Davis. In 1959, he founded the magazine Pilote, which premiered what was to become the most successful comic series anywhere: Asterix. He died suddenly of cardiac arrest in 1977 at the age of 51.
Albert Uderzo was born in France 1927 to Italian immigrants. In 1959, Goscinny and Uderzo became editor and artistic director (respectively) of Pilote magazine. Their creation, Asterix, became a runaway success. After Goscinny's death in 1977, 26 volumes of Asterix were complete, Uderzo continued to write and illustrate the Asterix books on his own, publishing 8 volumes. He retired in 2011 but continued to oversee Asterix publications by Jean-Yves Ferri and Didier Conrad until his death in 2020. The Asterix cover credits still read "Goscinny and Uderzo.”
Nanette McGuinness is an American soprano and literary translator, and the host and producer of the podcast For Good Measure for Ensemble for These Times. She is also the co-founder of the Ensemble for These Times, and is a two-time silver medalist and 2018 gold medalist at the Global Music Awards.
