Based on more than a decade of interviews with Chinese physicians, the author describes the cultural transformation of Chinese medicine. Behind the myth of a monolithic system, a differentiated picture emerges, marked by difference in professional trajectories, class origin, gender, migration, and region, and their relationships to education, pharmacy, Maoist-era institutions, forced regulation, and commercialization.
