George Orwell's classic satire of the Russian Revolution has become an intimate part of our contemporary culture, with its treatment of democratic, fascist, and socialist ideals through an animal fable. The animals of Mr. Jones' Manor Farm are overworked, mistreated, and desperately seeking a reprieve. In their quest to create an idyllic society where justice and equality reign, the animals of Manor Farm revolt against their human rulers, establishing the democratic Animal Farm under the credo, "All Animals Are Created Equal." Out of their cleverness, the pigs--Napoleon, Squealer, and Snowball--emerge as leaders of the new community. In a development of insidious familiarity, the pigs begin to assume ever greater amounts of power, while other animals, especially the faithful horse Boxer, assume more of the work. The climax of the story is the brutal betrayal of Boxer, when totalitarian rule is reestablished with the bloodstained postscript to the founding slogan: "But Some Animals Are More Equal than Others." This astonishing allegory, one of the most scathing satires in literary history, remains as fresh and relevant as the day it was published.

Ina Fabian a dat nota:

This book is a metaphoric and hilarious perspective of communism developed in a farm, where each animal represents the government and its leaders, but also people of a community. The story illustrates so well the principles of communism, how it was applied in the animal community and their reaction and mentality about it. There were two sides: those who were afraid to speak up and those who were not smart enough to know the difference between right or wrong. Moreover, I couldn’t resist compare it to real life, how a lider can influence a community and that actions can be told in a way to hide the truth. It was a pleasure reading this book, even though I postponed reading it for years. It’s a quick, fast-paced book, I highly recommend it!

Notă biografică

George Orwell, the pseudonym of Eric Arthur Blair, was born in Bengal, India, in 1903. He was educated at Eton and became a policeman in Burma. After leaving the police, he began to investigate the poverty in India and Europe which shaped his thinking about equality, money and power. His great works, Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four, are a product of his hatred of totalitarianism in all its forms and he was as critical of Stalin in the 1930s as he was ready to fight Fascism in the Spanish Civil War. His legacy of writing and political thought is much admired today. He died of tuberculosis in 1950.

John Sutherland is the Lord Northcliffe Professor Emeritus of Modern English Literature, UCL, and has taught at the University of Edinburgh and the California Institute of Technology. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature he is the author of many books and articles including the well-received Orwell's Nose: A Pathological Biography in 2016 and Stephen Spender: The Authorized Biography (2004).

Recenzii

Odyr, using a bright palette, has fully adapted what Orwell called “a fairy tale” satirizing Stalin—and the result is elegant and heartbreaking. Odyr’s images of animals casting off their bonds and then living with the results of their revolution are painterly and evocative, both loose and illuminating. Instead of a reduction of the original, Odyr’s imagined barnyard world adds to the depth of the characters: His pigs, horses, sheep and hens have expressive faces and postures, revealing both sweetness and malevolence.” —New York Times Book Review

Brazilian graphic novelist Odyr’s ‘fully authorized’ adaptation (in accordance with The Estate of Sonia Brownell Orwell) of Orwell’s 1945 classic is affecting example...alchemizing Orwell’s period writing into a timeless, immediately terrifying warning about the dangers of abusive power.” —Booklist

“[Odyr’s] rich brushstrokes do much to enhance the experience of Orwell’s brand of satire.” —New York Journal of Books

Textul de pe ultima copertă

A farm is taken over by its overworked, mistreated animals. With flaming idealism and stirring slogans, they embark on the creation of a paradise of progress, justice, and equality. Thus the stage is set for one of the most telling satiric fables ever penned -- a razor-edged fairy tale for grown-ups that records the evolution from revolution against tyranny to a totalitarianism just as terrible. When Animal Farm was first published fifty years ago, Stalinist Russia was seen as its target. Today it is devastatingly clear that wherever and whenever freedom is attacked, under whatever banner; the cutting clarity and savage comedy of George Orwell's masterpiece have a meaning and message still ferociously fresh.
