Alexander III of Macedon (20/21 July 356 - 10/11 June 323 BC), commonly known as Alexander the Great, was king of Macedon, a state in northern ancient Greece. Born in Pella in 356 BC, Alexander was tutored by Aristotle until the age of 16. Jacob Abbott (1803-1879) was an American educator, historian, and prolific author best known for his popular historical biographies written for general readers and younger audiences. A graduate of Bowdoin College and Andover Theological Seminary, Abbott devoted much of his career to writing accessible accounts of major historical figures, combining narrative clarity with moral reflection.His widely read "Makers of History" series introduced nineteenth-century readers to figures such as Julius Caesar, Cleopatra, Alexander the Great, and Mary, Queen of Scots.
