David Herbert Lawrence (September 11, 1985 - March 2, 1930) was an English writer. Much of Lawrence's work was based off his family life which featured tension between his father, a coal mine worker, and his mother who was a schoolmistress. Lawrence's opinions as well as the sexual content of some of his works made him a lot of enemies in his homeland and some of his novels were banned for many years. Lawrence and his wife left England after World War I and mostly traveled until Lawrence became ill and the couple finally settled in Florence, Italy. Lawrence's best known works are Sons and Lovers, Women in Love, and Lady Chatterley's Lover.

Born on September 11, 1885, in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, England, David Herbert Lawrence was the fourth child of a coal miner and a former schoolteacher. His upbringing in a working-class family deeply influenced his literary themes, particularly the tensions between industrialization and nature. Lawrence's early education and experiences in his hometown laid the foundation for his future works.In 1912, Lawrence met Frieda Weekley, with whom he eloped to Europe, marking the beginning of his extensive travels. This period saw the creation of some of his most significant novels, including Sons and Lovers (1913) and The Rainbow (1915), which explored complex human relationships and societal constraints. His candid portrayal of sexuality and critique of industrial society often led to controversy and censorship.Despite facing persecution and public misrepresentation, Lawrence continued to produce influential works across various genres. His final novel, Lady Chatterley's Lover (1928), was notorious for its explicit content and faced numerous legal challenges. Lawrence's relentless exploration of human emotions and social norms has solidified his legacy as a pivotal figure in modernist literature.

Abandoning his wife and children, Aaron Sisson leaves the mining community in pursuit of the 'life single': individual freedom, personal friendship, the 'male power' of passion and art. Playing the flute to pay his way he travels to post-war London, where he mixes with the modern Bohemian set and finds male friendship in Rawdon Lilly. Further travels take him to Milan and Florence ('a town of men') preoccupied with thoughts on the decline of humanity from the Renaissance to the modern age. For Aaron, in his own way, is striving to save civilization. Aaron's Rod was completed in 1921 but was then censored by Lawrence's publishers. This edition of the novel, based on the only authoritative surviving typescript, restores these cut passages and eliminates the errors of previous editions.
