A Practical Guide to Transdisciplinary Research: Problem-Solving and Community-Engaged Approaches

Autor Rosalyn Negrón
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 30 noi 2026
Focussing on transdisciplinary research as a research method for the future, this volume provides the latest thinking and accessible resources for problem-solving, collaborative research that cuts across disciplinary boundaries and engages different communities. Transdisciplinary research is a problem-solving research approach where different disciplines are combined and transcended, primarily through teamwork, to solve complex problems in the real world innovatively. This volume teases apart what transdisciplinarity looks like in practice at the individual, interpersonal, and project levels. The chapters cover conceptual ground with core ideas, philosophies, terms, and principles that distinguish trandisciplinarity from other research approaches, provides guidance in the planning and implementation of these approaches, and helping readers think through the different sections of a research proposal for a transdisciplinary project. A section dedicated to applications focusses on planning for and implementing research dissemination, translation, and application activities, with emphasis on community engagement as being central to the process. Developed for scholars in and outside of academia and with graduate students in mind, it would also be of value to undergraduate students in specialized, practice-based programs, for developing team-based projects and honors theses based on applied research projects.

Recenzii

'At last, a clear, information-packed book about the how-to of transdisciplinary research in the real-world contexts of communities. Advocating with a strong voice the importance of thinking beyond traditional academic boundaries, the book is both intellectually compelling and practically valuable for advancing transdisciplinary research.'
- H. Russell Bernard, Director Inst. for Social Science Research, Arizona State University
'Negrón’s book is a gift, and not just to graduate students! Clearly written, deeply anchored in a broad literature, rich in its conceptual architecture and in real-life examples, and full of practices that offer aspiring TD researchers more than a dry-run before trying their hand in situations where skill and respect matter – it is such a useful and inspiring contribution to the world of transdisciplinary research. Go, no run, to get your copy!'
- Susanne C. Moser, Ph.D. Susanne Moser Research & Consulting and Antioch University New England
'Transdisciplinary Research: A Practical Guide is an excellent resource for anyone interested in transdisciplinary research, offering a well-informed, sophisticated, and relentlessly pragmatic approach to problem-solving transdisciplinarity that will be as useful to old hands as it will to new converts. This is the book for researchers who wish to take up projects that address societally relevant projects in ways that are engaged, respectful, and just. It offers illuminating case studies, numerous helpful questions for practice, and exercises designed to facilitate transfer of knowledge from page to practice.'
 - Michael O’Rourke Professor, Department of Philosophy, Faculty, AgBioResearch and Environmental Science and Policy Program, Executive Director, Toolbox Dialogue Initiative Center, Michigan State University
'Rosalyn Negrón brings a unique voice and vision to transdisciplinary research. She embraces humanism and science, is comfortable living across cultures, and encourages us all to wrestle with contradictions in our work and lives. Her text on transdisciplinary methods is a warm and confident guide for anyone who wants to traverse many ways of knowing to produce more holistic scholarship'.
