In August 2011, Congress and the President enacted the BCA, amending BBEDCA. Among other things, the BCA established the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction (Joint Committee), which was tasked with proposing legislation to reduce the deficit by $1.2 trillion or more through fiscal year 2021. The Joint Committee was directed to report its proposal by December 2, 2011, and Congress and the President were to enact legislation by January 15, 2012.
