Winston Smith is a low-positioning member of the ruling Party in London, in the country of Oceania. Wherever Winston goes, even in his own home, the Party watches him through telescreens; wherever he looks he sees the substance of the Party's all-knowing pioneer, a figure referred to just as Big Brother. The Party controls everything in Oceania, even individuals' set of experiences and language. The Party introduces some set of new rules which tend to banish the individuality of all the citizens residing. In any event, thinking defiant contemplations is unlawful. Such thoughtcrime is, truth be told, the most noticeably terrible of all violations. As the novel opens, Winston feels disappointed by the persecution and unbending control of the Party, which forbids free idea, sex, and any outflow of uniqueness. Winston hates the gathering and has wrongfully bought a journal in which to compose his criminal musings.

1984 tells the story of a government official, Winston Smith, who works daily to erase and alter history for the Ministry of Truth. Despite, or perhaps because of, this work for the regime, inside, he harbors a great disdain for the system. 1984 depicts his struggle for truth, freedom and sanity, against the odds. Strongly influenced by the totalitarian systems Orwell saw springing up around the world in the 1930s and 40s, 1984 is essential reading for anyone interested in upholding freedom of thought and action. Beyond the insights into various forms of oppression and control, the book is simply a grippingly exciting novel. Our edition features a 28-page section on George Orwell's tumultuous life and times, including his own words on his motivations for writing in the form of the essay Why I write. The book comes in 170x240mm format with hard cover in red cloth, serigraphic, foil and debossed details, designed by Petri Salmela in Helsinki.

Nineteen Eighty-Four is a remarkable book; as a virtuoso literary performance it has a sustained brilliance that has rarely been matched in other works of its genre…It is as timely as the label on a poison bottle.” –New York Herald Tribune

“A profound, terrifying, and wholly fascinating book…Orwell’s theory of power is developed brilliantly.” –The New Yorker

“A book that goes through the reader like an east wind, cracking the skin…Such are the originality, the suspense, the speed of writing, and withering indignation that it is impossible to put the book down.” –V. S. Pritchett

“Orwell’s novel escorts us so quietly, so directly, and so dramatically from our own day to the fate which may be ours in the future, that the experience is a blood-chilling one.” –Saturday Review

Textul de pe ultima copertă

While the totalitarianism that provoked George Orwell into writing 'Nineteen Eighty-Four' seems to be passing into oblivion, his harrowing, cautionary tale of a man trapped in a political nightmare has had the opposite fate, and its relevance and power to disturb our complacency seem to grow decade by decade.
