WWE Raw

By examining more than thirty years of WWE Raw, this book offers a fresh perspective on broader transformations in technology, genre, politics, gender, and audience engagement in television.

WWE Raw explores one of the longest-running and most influential programs in television history. Broadcast continuously since 1993 and now streamed globally through Netflix, Raw has remained a fixture of popular culture while television itself has undergone profound technological, industrial, and cultural change. Using Raw as a lens through which to examine the evolution of television, Andrew Zolides explores how the program has adapted across the transition from cable broadcasting to streaming platforms, from national distribution to global audiences, and from traditional viewing habits to highly participatory fan cultures. Through chapters on technology, industry, genre, politics, gender, and fandom, the book demonstrates how Raw exemplifies many of the defining characteristics of television as a medium.

The book examines Raw's unique blend of sports, soap opera, variety entertainment, and live event broadcasting, alongside its engagement with political culture, its representations of gender and sexuality, and its unusually active relationship with audiences. In doing so, it reveals how the program has continually evolved while maintaining its position at the center of television culture for more than three decades. Written for students, scholars, and television enthusiasts alike, this volume will appeal to readers of television studies, media studies, popular culture, sports media, and contemporary screen culture.
