The poems deal with themes of personal loss and the rediscovery of self. The book is divided into sections, each one highlighting an aspect of the two major themes. The poems within each section reflect the soul's earthly progress toward a sense of understanding or completion. From the vantage point of old age and devastating loss, seemingly random past events reveal patterns of fate and meaning whose significance is apprehended only in hindsight.
