When the River Burned: The Untold Story of the Jupiter Explosion
Autor Joey Oliveren Limba Engleză Paperback – oct 2026
When the River Burned tells the story of this overlooked chapter in Great Lakes maritime history. Drawing on newspaper archives, Coast Guard investigations, and eyewitness accounts, Joey Oliver reconstructs how a series of small oversights—in equipment, procedure, and human judgment—aligned to produce catastrophe.
The book places the Jupiter explosion within a broader history of the Saginaw River, tracing its evolution into a vital artery of Michigan industry. Oliver examines the fragile interdependence of ships, piers, and river traffic, revealing how disasters emerge not from single causes but from the breakdown of complex systems. When the River Burned is not only the account of a deadly tanker explosion; it is a reflection on what caused it, on the safety changes that followed, and on changes that never came.

Recenzii
“Joey Oliver’s book is amazing. It takes the reader through the evolution of the geology and economic morphology of the mighty Saginaw River and showcases why this waterway is so important before delving into the facts and personalities involved in the accident. The book is fair and balanced with an investigation into the reasons why the largest tanker disaster on the lakes happened and shares the response of local firefighters and rescue personnel as well. It’s a must-read.”—Ric Mixter, author of Tattletale Sounds: The Edmund Fitzgerald Investigations and documentarian
“Joey Oliver’s When the River Burned is a compelling read and a book that should be on the shelves of every Michigan history classroom. Oliver shows us creatively and convincingly that it’s never too late to learn crucial lessons from our past that might otherwise be lost in history’s forgotten footnotes.”—Thomas M. Nelson, author of Wrecked: The Edmund Fitzgerald and the Sinking of the American Economy
