A runaway girl searching for safety. A lonely woman searching for purpose. Together, they redefine what family means.
After witnessing her mother's murder, ten-year-old Chickapea rides the rails to Worthy, Texas, mute from trauma and armed only with her mother's dying words: You have family there.
She crosses paths with Ruth Pearl, a widowed nurse whose life stalled the day she buried her husband. Ruth isn't looking for a child to save, yet something about the silent girl with dirt under her fingernails and grief in her eyes won't let Ruth turn away. As Chickapea coaxes life from a neglected garden and Ruth opens her heart to this unexpected child, they build something fragile and beautiful: a family chosen, not born.
But when a faded photograph reveals that Chickapea's roots in Worthy run deeper than anyone imagined-and the man who silenced her tracks her down-Chickapea must do the one thing trauma has made impossible: find her voice.
