Critical whiteness studies are characterised by the assertion of a critical imperative that creates the necessary room for thought for disputatious dialogue between contributions from a Black and from white point of view. Black questions and white questions differ; while the one side opens up fundamental structural debates on access to knowledge and power relations, the other side is primarily concerned with specific sets of issues. This difference, which is an instrument of the fundamental methodical approach of critical whiteness studies, becomes perceptible through the fact that each respective way of seeing societal hierarchies and the resulting differences in the ways individuals are affected are primarily objective facts that can be explained historically.
