We're Having a Baby is a beautifully illustrated childrens book created to gently prepare older siblings for the arrival of a new baby through the experience of homebirth.
Written by private practice midwife Abbey Rodda, this story follows a young child as they discover what it means to welcome a new brother or sister into the family. With warmth, curiosity and reassurance, the book introduces the sights, sounds and emotions of labour and birth in a way that feels safe, calm and age-appropriate.
Rather than focusing only on the moment of birth, the story celebrates the journey of becoming an older sibling. It explores the excitement, questions, changing family dynamics and the important role children can play as they welcome a new baby. The book encourages connection, confidence and open conversations, helping children understand what they may see and hear while reassuring them that they are loved, included and an important part of the experience.
Beautifully illustrated by Nick Potts, We're Having a Baby reflects the peaceful, family-centred nature of birth at home while remaining respectful of the many different ways babies come into the world. It is not intended to suggest that one birth setting is better than another, but instead offers families who are planning a homebirth a resource that helps children understand and participate in the experience.
Perfect for families expecting a new baby, midwives, doulas, childbirth educators and anyone supporting children through the arrival of a sibling, this book creates opportunities for meaningful conversations before, during and after birth.
Because every growing family has its own unique story, We're Having a Baby is ultimately a book about love, belonging and the joy of welcoming someone new into the family.
