A multidisciplinary examination of Danish artist Vilhelm Hammershøi’s haunting interior paintings
From 1898 to 1909, Danish artist Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864–1916) painted canvas after canvas of his apartment at Strandgade 30 in Copenhagen. He ultimately produced about 60 paintings of his home, imbuing each image with a haunting sense of the uncanny. Hammershøi’s almost obsessive analysis of his living space raises questions about the notion of home at the turn of the twentieth century. Through conservation and scholarly research, this publication offers new insights on this body of work within Hammershøi’s practice.
Vilhelm Hammershøi: Pictures from Home explores Hammershøi’s work through multiple disciplines and includes contributions by leading Hammershøi scholars as well as architect Alberto Veiga, author Colm Tóibín, artists Ed Ruscha and Marie Herwald Hermann, and composer Nico Muhly. Their essays address varied themes, including:

• Hammershøi’s use of photography
• His dreamlike depictions of home
• His collaboration with his wife, Ida
• The history of the building in which he lived

This groundbreaking book explores Hammershøi’s mysterious and evocative domestic paintings, offering a meditation on the theme of home.
