Vi is an only child in a unique Vietnamese family: while her breadwinning mother comes from a humble background, her father is wealthy, spoiled, and never had to grow up. The Vietnam War disturbs the family's balance, and she is forced to flee to Canada. This novel about refugees and immigrants is also a study of love and the mystery of existence anywhere on earth.
