This illustrated volume examines the decisive early years in the 1620s during which Diego Velázquez (1599–1660) transformed from a young Sevillian painter into the leading artist of the Spanish royal court. Centered on a small group of portraits of the Count-Duke of Olivares—Philip IV’s powerful prime minister and the artist’s earliest patron in Madrid—the book traces how Velázquez developed a new language of court portraiture, one that balanced close observation with restraint, authority, and psychological presence. 
Bringing together new research and close visual analysis by leading scholars, the publication:
