Varieties of Ecclesial Unity: Theological History and Contemporary Challenges: Routledge Contemporary Ecclesiology

Autor Paul Silas Peterson
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 23 feb 2027
Varieties of Ecclesial Unity explores ecumenical transformations in contemporary church history and theology. In the second half of the twentieth century, following World War Two, the work towards more Christian unity and ecclesial cooperation became one of the central tasks of church leadership and theological research. The book considers the shift to unity in faith and practice, how the legacy of this ecumenical approach is no longer certain, and whether the sentiment of unifying reconciliation has a future. In today’s context there are many new questions about the plurality of Christianity and new challenges to the idea of unity itself. The author reflects on how the unity of the universal church was understood in the ecumenical movement, and how it provides an alternative vision to war and nationalism today. He also offers a new proposal for thinking about the reconciliation of difference based upon multiple conceptions of unity rather than a singular theory or concept. The book is relevant to scholars of Christian theology, church history and ecclesiology, as well as others with an interest in ecumenism and peacebuilding.

Recenzii

“Robust efforts at achieving the unity of churches — and thereby also the unity of humanity — that were characteristic of the second half of the twentieth century are now a thing of the past. Peterson’s learned and readable book explores forms that pursuit of ecclesial unity may take in a pluralistic environment marked by secularization and cultural polarization.”
 - Miroslav Volf, Yale Divinity School
“Works on Christian ecumenism tend to follow one of two paths. Theological treatments of the topic can make light of historical context and narrow their focus to the detail of inter-confessional arguments over baptism, eucharist and ministry.  In contrast, historical writing on ecumenism can degenerate into a rather tedious account of successive ecumenical conferences and leaders. Peterson avoids both extremes. He interprets ecumenical history broadly, in the light of global conflicts and resurgent nationalism in the modern world. At the same time, he relates theological disagreement between Christians to deeper currents in philosophical theology and linguistic theory. This book thus makes a welcome and original contribution to the subject.”
- Brian Stanley, University of Edinburgh
