Notă biografică
Simon Murgatroyd is Alan Ayckbourn's archivist and the creator, curator and writer of the playwright's official website www.alanayckbourn.net. This website, spanning more than 3,500 pages, is regarded as the definitive resource relating to the playwright and his plays.
He is a professional writer whose articles relating to Alan Ayckbourn have been published extensively around the world. This includes writing for the world, West End and New York premieres of Alan Ayckbourn's plays as well as for venues and events ranging from the National Theatre to the Edinburgh International Festival.
Simon has been working with the Ayckbourn Archive since 2005 and oversaw the transfer of the archive to the Borthwick Institute at the University of York in 2011 following its acquisition for the nation. He continues to collect new material for the Archive as well as maintaining an extensive digital archive in conjunction with the playwright and the website.
He also administers, researches and hosts the Ayckbourn YouTube Channel (@AlanAyckbournPlaywright) with a remit of further exploring the playwright and his plays in other media.
Simon is also an expert on the history of theatre-in-the-round in Scarborough, where Alan Ayckbourn is based and the UK's first professional theatre-in-the-round company was founded in 1955 by Stephen Joseph. He frequently gives public talks connected to this and, in 2023, launched www.theatre-in-the-round.co.uk looking at the history of theatre-in-the-round in Scarborough and its contribution to the town's cultural heritage. He has worked extensively with the Stephen Joseph Theatre since 1999 in a variety of roles.
Unseen Ayckbourn was named as one of The Stage's best theatre books of 2013 and has been revised and updated several times subsequently.
Simon's own website can be found at www.simon-murgatroyd.com and he tweets about his archival work on @ArchivingAlanA and can be found on Instagram at @ayckbourn_playwright.
