Understanding Litho-Space Weather: From Atoms to Atmospheres

Autor Dimitar Ouzounov, Galina Khachikyan
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 26 mar 2027
This book explores the multi-sphere electromagnetic link — from the Sun and interplanetary space through the magnetosphere, ionosphere, and atmosphere down to the lithosphere — using advanced space- and ground-based experiments.
It brings together, for the first time, over 150 years of research on solar-lithospheric connections, inspired by the authors' recent findings demonstrating the tangible contribution of geomagnetic storms to the preparation of strong earthquakes.
This volume serves as an essential reference for graduate students, researchers, and specialists in geophysics, geodynamics, seismology, atmospheric and ionospheric science, geospace observation, and natural hazards. By introducing a novel framework for understanding how the geospace environment modulates lithospheric processes and major tectonic hazards, this work provides critical insights to advance our physical understanding of global seismicity.
Key Features:
  • Synthesizes over 150 years of interdisciplinary research into a single comprehensive volume.
  • Advances fundamental understanding of planetary processes through the cross-fertilization of heliophysics, geospace science, and solid-Earth geodynamics.
  • Highlights new opportunities for discovery driven by contemporary multi-mission spaceborne and ground-based observations.

Notă biografică

Dimitar Ouzounov serves as a Visiting Professor at the Hellenic Mediterranean University Research Center (Institute of Physics of the Earth’s Interior and Geohazards) in Chania, Greece. He holds active research affiliations with the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) in Italy, Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski", and the Institute of Space Research and Technology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. He earned his Ph.D. in Physics and Mathematics (Geophysics) in 1990 from the Schmidt Institute of Physics of the Earth, Russian Academy of Sciences, in Moscow. His career includes service as a Research Scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and as a Research Professor at Chapman University in Orange, California. Dr. Ouzounov has authored approximately 200 scientific papers and conference proceedings and co-authored several benchmark monographs examining pre-earthquake processes, Lithosphere-Atmosphere-Ionosphere Coupling (LAIC), geosphere coupling, and seismic hazard assessment.
Galina Khachikyan is a Principal Research Scientist at the National Scientific Center for Seismological Observation and Research (NSCSOR) in Kazakhstan. She received her Ph.D. in Physics and Mathematics (Geophysics) in 1979 from Tbilisi State University, Georgia (former USSR), and earned her D.Sc. (Habilitation) in Physics and Mathematics in 1998 from the Institute of the Ionosphere, Academy of Sciences, in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Following her tenure as a Researcher at the Institute of the Ionosphere, she joined the Institute of Seismology (now NSCSOR) of the Kazakh Academy of Sciences in 2002. Dr. Khachikyan has authored more than fifty peer-reviewed papers and conference proceedings and co-authored specialized monographs on geophysics, space weather, and global seismicity.
