Unbalancing Act: Stahlecker Selections
Autor M.M. Kellyen Limba Engleză Paperback – 15 sep 2026
At its heart, the book is about imbalance as a kind of truth: the way trauma warps time, the way love can feel like weather, the way the body keeps trying to survive even when the mind wants to disappear. It's a collection for readers who like their beauty a little feral—poems that are tender but not precious, intelligent but not academic, and emotionally sharp without ever losing their sense of wonder.

Recenzii
In her debut collection, M.M. Kelly examines love and loss with an unflinching eye and a fresh, inimitable voice. She has a keen affinity for the natural world while being wise about human frailty, longing, and pain. Urgent and memorable, these poems sing with intelligence, heart, and craft.
—Gardner McFall
Here's the thing. As I read Unbalancing Act, I felt myself becoming M.M. Kelly. Again and again, opening to intelligent wonder, concentrating on clearly denoted subjects, relishing particulars, but also inventing, loving, and discovering. Rarely, if ever, have I so naturally and easily assumed the authority of a first book.
—Rodney Jones
M.M. Kelly's debut collection, Unbalancing Act, is a feat of acrobatic poetics that manages to hold in tense and ebullient equilibrium the painful life-facts that leap out of reach even of one's grief and those inexplicable experiences of "warm-blooded grace." Kelly's poems at once are laser-focused on what terrorizes us-"staring down the cold barrels / of ourselves"-and richly pliable enough to embody wide ranges of even non-human experience: "how reptiles sleep, but don't dream," "how octopi change color in REM," "how porpoises / sleep with one eye open and only / half a brain at a time." What can one say about a poet who fearlessly faces "the grim immensities" but knows also "the soul turning…toward the fathomless face of a mystic?" Her grip never slips. These marvelous poems call readers to feel their own axes shift.

"On Particle Physics."
So much talk of outer
space, but what of inner
space, inner spaces-
of the wildernesses between
atoms, between thoughts,
between savaging dreams.
For you-the war, the father,
the fire, the wife. For me-
the brother, the brother.
Loss makes us paper
cups with puncture wounds.
Cups that will never quite
fill. Running water is
required.
You, my running water.
