The UN Secretariat administers the programs and policies established by the other principal organs of the UN, including the General Assembly and the Security Council. The duties of the Secretariat include administering peacekeeping operations, mediating international disputes, surveying economic and social trends and problems, and preparing studies on human rights and sustainable development. The Secretariat is headquartered in New York City and has employees at other locations throughout the world. The Secretariat is primarily funded through assessed contributions from member states to the UN regular budget.
