James Joyce (1882-1941) was an Irish novelist, short-story writer, and poet whose bold experiments with language and narrative helped transform modern literature. Born in Dublin, Joyce drew deeply on the city's streets, people, politics, religion, and social tensions, even after spending most of his adult life abroad in Trieste, Zurich, and Paris.He first gained major recognition with Dubliners, a collection of stories portraying everyday life in early twentieth-century Dublin. He followed it with the semi-autobiographical novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and the groundbreaking Ulysses, which reimagines Homer's Odyssey through a single day in Dublin. His final novel, Finnegans Wake, pushed his fascination with wordplay, myth, history, and the rhythms of speech to its furthest limits.Joyce's work is celebrated for its psychological depth, inventive style, and extraordinary attention to language. Though his writing was often controversial and sometimes banned, he is now regarded as one of the most influential authors of the twentieth century.
