Notă biografică
Joseph Conrad was a Polish-British novelist and short-story writer whose fiction became central to modern English literature. Born Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski in 1857 in what is now Ukraine, Conrad spent years at sea before turning to fiction in English, his third language. His maritime experience, exile, multilingual background, and knowledge of colonial trade shaped a body of work concerned with moral pressure, isolation, imperial violence, loyalty, betrayal, and the darkness beneath civilized surfaces.Conrad's major works include Almayer's Folly, An Outcast of the Islands, The Nigger of the "Narcissus", Lord Jim, Heart of Darkness, Nostromo, The Secret Agent, and Under Western Eyes. His fiction is known for psychological depth, complex narration, political unease, and a profound suspicion of imperial certainty. In Almayer's Folly, his first novel, many of those later concerns are already visible: the damaged European abroad, the limits of colonial ambition, and the disastrous gap between illusion and reality.
