The hero of the book, the Reporter, is asked to assist in a police investigation following the murder of one of his compatriots, a Romanian immigrant that has been involved in criminal activities. The narrative offers the reader an insight in the lives of post-communist era emigrants from Eastern Europe and their efforts to integrate in the United States. While adapting to a new way of life and striving to achieve the American Dream, some of the newcomers are still addicted to old ways and mentality, driving them in conflicts among themselves and with the law. Apart from descriptions of ethnic traditions and custom, the novel brings in pages of love intrigues, gossip, and murder. The plot itself unfolds on two planes: the police investigation and a parallel one, carried by the Reporter. Surprisingly, the denouement favors the Reporter's findings.
