Suntem de părere că True Story reprezintă o subversiune fascinantă a romanului de tip „campus novel”, refuzând să se lase încorsetat de o singură structură de gen. Kate Reed Petty semnează un debut ambițios care funcționează ca un caleidoscop literar: ceea ce începe ca un mister polițist clasic despre o noapte pierdută în negura alcoolului se transformă succesiv în horror psihologic și critică socială tăioasă. Putem afirma că forța cărții rezidă nu neapărat în rezolvarea misterului, ci în modul în care fragmentează realitatea pentru a ilustra fractura interioară a personajului principal, Alice. Stilul are ceva din proza lui Myla Goldberg în The False Friend, fără să fie o imitație — ambele autoare explorează cu o precizie chirurgicală modul în care o minciună sau o omisiune din tinerețe poate dicta cursul întregii vieți adulte, însă Petty plonjează mult mai adânc în experimentul formal. Notăm cu interes cum autoarea își păstrează preocuparea pentru mecanismele adevărului, temă prezentă și în lucrarea sa anterioară, The Leak, însă aici abordarea este mult mai viscerală și matură. Ritmul lecturii este dictat de schimbările bruște de ton, de la umorul sec al eseurilor de admitere la tensiunea sufocantă a unei relații abuzive, obligând cititorul să navigheze printre versiuni contradictorii ale aceluiași eveniment traumatic. Este o explorare densă a modului în care ne construim identitatea prin poveștile pe care alegem să le spunem despre noi înșine și despre ceilalți.

True Story is a superb novel, genuinely frightening, almost unbearably suspenseful and yet, with all that, wonderfully tender and compassionate towards its characters. The writing is exemplary: economical, elegant, searching, precise. It is almost impossible to believe that such a powerful and accomplished book is a first novel. But this isn't just a great first novel, it's an important book for the difficult and highly topical subjects it takes on, bravely and with the kind of care for truth that is all so rare in the current climate.

My first book of 2020 is #truestory by @PettyKate and I loved it. Such a smart, powerful, ambitious book, very high concept and so effectively realised. Definitely one to look out for this summer
