An award-winning writer and director, Anne Slatton is a Mass Communication professor at the University of North Carolina Asheville where she teaches screenwriting, fiction and documentary film production in addition to film history and critical studies. Her production work in film and television includes directing, writing and producing. Her scholarly works include co-authorship of video production textbook, Video Production Techniques: Theory and Practice From Concept to Screen as well as book chapters on Sofia Coppola and Lorraine Hansberry. She has also written original dramatic and educational materials for schools and community theaters across the United States and abroad. Prés de Lune, co-written with co-author Anne Scarbrough, was produced in Memphis and Los Angeles and garnered three and four star reviews in the internationally renowned Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. Journey to Never Ending Mountain was produced at Hangar Hall, A School for Girls, in Asheville, NC. She believes in creating female protagonists that are unique and yet relatable.
Anne Scarbrough began her formal arts training at the age of 11 when she became a student at the Alabama School of Fine Arts. During these formative years, Anne studied all disciplines in the arts and developed a love and appreciation for each. In choosing a career path, she chose Theatre Arts with the hope that she could continue to express herself in in a wide variety of media. She's not been disappointed. She received her BFA from the University of Alabama and her MFA in acting from the University of Georgia. Anne has been twice recognized for outstanding theatrical performance by the Memphis Ostrander Awards, for her performances in Stop Kiss and Spinning Into Butter, and by the San Diego Critics Circle for her performance in The Miss Firecracker Contest. She received the Gold Award from Houston WorldFest for her screenplay, Thyme in Forever with co-writer Anne Slatton, has co-written several plays and a novel and was the recipient of a Fulbright-Hays Fellowship. Her directing credits include: the world premiere of Commencement, presented at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, The Starry Road to Freedom for the Memphis Civil Rights Museum, and The Santaland Dairies at TheatreWorks, The Trip to Bountiful at Cape Fear Regional Theatre and Buyer and Cellar at Playhouse on the Square. She has taught high school students in Tennessee, Alabama, San Diego, Singapore, Los Angeles and Asheville, and loves helping students develop their artistic skills and their personal aesthetic. She is never more content than when working in the studio with students. She has studied with Moises Kaufman and Mary Overlie and is practiced in theatrical devising and physical theatre techniques. She has two unsurvivably cute dogs, Bodhi and Amos, is an avid reader, loves being on, in and around water, prefers to be outdoors whenever possible where she now lives in the mountains of North Carolina.
