Carlton James and Dr. Vincent Hale have discovered a small 1800s mining town in Amador City outside of Los Angeles in the mid 1950s. In Carbondale, a "gold-rush" town nearby, an envelope labeled "Underground Phenomena" contains interviews with a miner revealing an erratic cult of fundamentalism and apparent primitive superstitions about entire mining settlements being punished by beings from the underground tunnels.
